Meets with internet friends can be a lot of fun and they can enhance your prospects of travel.
Firstly let me say this, not everyone you meet will you hit it off with. You may be best of friends online but in real life, they may well be a very different person simply because a lot of people do use the internet as an outlet for their own insecurities. A lot of them will continually say they will turn up but at the last minute they will bail out and give some poor excuse.
However, the positive side is this:
I have travelled all over NSW and Qld and met up with many internet friends and have had the opportunity to stay at their places which makes accommodation cheap to say the least. It also means that by not paying for accommodation, it gives you the opportunity to spend a little bit on your hosts showing your appreciation.
I think that where you do meet someone on the internet and you are able to stay with them on your travels, then initially you should not make it more than a stop over for the night. Once you get to know the person and you both hit it off then, naturally, you can extend the times together as you see fit.
Now all this is just getting to one point and one point only, if you ever have the opportunity to go to an internet meet, then do it. You might be surprised just how easy it is and you might just make a few friends for life along the way, friends that you would have only ever known in cyberspace.
